Milestones

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Spent two incredible days in Johannesburg. As much as the glitz and glamour, the fast paced life and visible wealth of Joburg’s opportunities were appealing, the traffic and harsh feel of a proper city was equally repulsive. But its the financial hub of Southern Africa, and world far removed from my own. Two days, two contracts, [...]

Breede 07

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Spent time this weekend at the Breede River Canoe Marathon supporting Ruth’s two brothers, Doug and Steve, as well as some other mates racing. Enjoyed the small thrills of racing from vantage point to point following the action, but would far rather have been on the water myself.

A winters day on the farm

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Steve Bird captured a setting sun after a rainy day out on the farm. This is home to me. I’m the 6th generation of Hugo’s here, and hope to keep the lineage.

Five Flies

Five Flies - Restaurant & Bars:
“It’s classic in a contemporary way.
Its’s a restaurant but it’s also bars.
It’s got a lot of heritage but its very now.
And it’s well worth a visit.”

Elizabeth Arden

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Had the strange opportunity to present a talk on “Goal’s” to the financial group of Elizabeth Arden’s South African head-office. Enjoyed the chance to, but sure was bit different to what I’ve done in the past. If anything, made me think of what I should be planning.

Long ride over Franschhoek Pass

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

One of the favourite rides in my hood. And had picture perfect weather to ride in, prob the warmest day we’ve had for ages, with bits of snow still capping the mountains in the distance.

Paul Roos vs Grey 2007

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

Watched some of the excitement this weekend, while enjoying seeing some old school friends partying it up around the games. Must have been 15 000 plus people attending the main rugby game at the Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch. The spirit and heritage there is hard if not impossible to explain. But really enjoyed all.

Paul Roos - Big Brag 2007

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Was asked to address my pride and honour, my Maroon almamater this morning, in a spirit building tradition before the big interschool’s meet of the year. Such a pleasure and treat speaking to 1000 amped lads, prepared to do battle against Bloemfontein’s Grey College.
Rugby is the main focus, but field hockey, waterpolo, mountain biking, chess, debating, tennis, [...]

Little Children - Movie Review

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

I watched a movie last week which has stayed with me for a few days, and been digesting it ever since. In essence, I experienced the film to depict how relative ‘normal’ is, and how easy it is to point a finger, yet all is more oft than not what the fascade seems. Thought provoking [...]

Conrad Stoltz

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Enjoy this clip of Conrad and Xterra. Such a great guy, such a gifted athlete, and such an influence in my journey. Still dependand on stacks of hand me downs from him.

Wrist in detail

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Feeling plenty more positive after the weekend. Admittedly was a little disappointed on Friday. Really wanted to let rip from here. But seems another month of caution it will be. But got to swim yesterday, without anything, and rode out on the road for the first time this morning.

Neither here nor there

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

D-day was alright, and after hours of thought, I’ve made a peace and going to make it a positive. In short, my wrist is healing, but has not healed totally yet. Been nine weeks since my crash day, and eight since my operation. Best case would have been a ‘all good, free to fly’ comment, [...]

If - By Rudyard Kipling

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

My father used to recite parts of this poem when I was a youngster, and recall days when I’d grind my teeth to the few lines I knew off by heart. Only years later did I find the entire poem, only to see that I’d scripted words incorrectly onto the cornerstone of my darker moments character.

Figure’s enthusiasts

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

Have been trying to make sense of my latest toy, the Garmin Forerunner 305 for the past two weeks, and figured to show you some of its mind blowing applications. I know I have yet to scratch the surface of its potential, but already I have been greatly impressed. It even has the potential to [...]

Langebaan for the weekend

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

Spent a stunning two days up the West Coast at a family spot on the Langebaan lagoon. Twas perfect winter days, with crisp clear air and a baby blue sky. Just about flower season, and will have to head back there in a few weeks time to see the carpets of wild daisies that will cover [...]

Rory Eliot and The Reason gig

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Went to watch a show at the Klein Libertas theatre in Stellenbosch last night. Ruth knows the artist personally, and has converted me over the past few months. A brilliant local act, with a number 1 hit on 5fm for their last single When Grace Grew Tall.
Have a look at their home page. Even try get hold of [...]

My Left Scaphoid

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

The scaphoid is described as a small bone in the wrist, also most likely to break in the wrist. Its located on the thumb side, where the wrist bends. Arguably one of the most researched bones in the body. One, for its significance in the wrist, and two, for its poor blood supply and consequentially bad [...]

Breede in flood

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Spent a chilly weekend on the family farm just outside Worcester. The Breede was in full flow, probably only seen it higher once. The mountains through Du Toits Kloof pass were half covered in snow, so too the Brandwag range behind town. Perhaps a twice yearly occurrence and something special to see.
