A proper flogging

April 30th, 2009 by Dan Hugo

I cracked into a thousand little fragments of ambition, expectation, disappointment, pain, and so forth yesterday morning during a bailed swim attempt with the Truckee Masters after waking with headspace as thick as Beijing pollution and balance as wobbly as Gary and I on Saturday’s log riding (I’ll get it on video next time).

Stumbling from bed after momentary confusion as to why Kings of Leon was playing on my iPhone or why I was in this dark room in compression tights, I still had enough ambition and expectation to make it down town. But half way through, I realised what little use my vertigo and lack of energy was to a constructive swim set. 4hours of nap time later, and the thousand little pieces were back in their mozaic.

Only to be shattered in a proper public flogging of the Boca Road Race. My lungs were maxed out helium balloons, inflating deflating inflating deflating with faint cries for mercy in a helium high voice. It was perfect, the flogging that is.

Needed to get a good intensive load in before this weekend.

We figured the morning’s tantrum was not just altitude effect, but lack of liquids and proper hydration here in the cold. So drowned myself with water, juice and Chocolate Soy Milk, and seemed to respond well to it. Best get packing and sorted for the trip. Still need to grab some odds and ends at the bike shop on the way, fix lunch for the road (maybe more quinoa), swap wheels and cluster, and hop in one leg.

Mad bike skills = most inspiring footage = a must see

April 28th, 2009 by Dan Hugo

Just before heading out on my morning run, Conrad Snover hauled me over for a glimpse Danny MacAskill and his insane skill. Its unreal that the envelope can be pushed so far, with such extreme drive. Very motivating, and reckon its universal motivation – so take the five minutes and be blown away till nothing but awe and inspiration remains in your spirit.

Premier week in Truckee, California

Aha. Sunday night and little energy left to tick the ‘must post block’ on the weekend to-do as the orchestra of frogs outside sound like they share my bedroom here at the Snover home in Tahoe Donner, a neighbourhood above Truckee where I’ve been welcomed for my first few days. Days that have reminded me why I love travel, why I love what I do, who I’ve become. Its as if the eye flaps drop away and the world of senses open to me in a way home could never do.
