Antarctic Ice Marathon 2007 Results
December 23rd, 2007 by Dan Hugo

My two Brazilian friends ran phenomenally well to finish 4th and 10th in harsh conditions in the Antarctic. I’ll try get a personal account from then as soon they are back in civilization and recovered.
I copied some of the last updates from the Ice Marathon Website below.
Live Updates:
DECEMBER 23RD 2007
Competitors are expecting a flight out of the Antarctic today.
DECEMBER 22ND 2007
There are two amendments to the results posted yesterday. Susan Holliday’s (GBR) time for the 100km was actually 21:50:02 and not 22:02:15 as originally posted. Furthermore, after being temporarily pulled out of the event by officials at the half-marathon mark, Henri Girault (FRA) was later allowed to continue and reached the marathon distance. He thus become an official 26.2-mile marathon finisher with a cumulative time of 11:15:52 hrs. The full and final official results are now on the website, including a half-marathon fisnish by Bertrand Mahe (FRA).
DECEMBER 21ST 2007
The marathon and 100km concluded in the early hours of this morning. The full set of results is posted here. Conditions became extremely difficult only two hours into the race. Although the temperature remained at only -8C to -10C throughout, it began to snow and fog descended on the course. Eventually, freezing sleet also confronted the runners. Many found it very problematic just to see the course and Henri Girault (FRA) became a casualty of the conditions, which also comprised loose snow underfoot. Unfortunately, the brave seventy-one-year-old could not manage to fulfill his goal of running 100km on the seventh continent and was forced to pull up. He is in good spirits, however. The marathon and 100km were operated concurrently because of the late arrival into the Antarctic, but only two of the ten originally entered for the 100km attempted to run beyond the marathon distance. Marc De Keyser (Belgium) won the marathon in a new record, ahead of two Irishmen, Mark Scanlon and Peter Bell. Christian Schiester (Austria) took the 100km title with Susan Holliday (Great Britain) becoming the first woman ever to complete the distance in Antarctica. The competitors are now hoping for good conditions to enable a flight home.
DECEMBER 20TH 2007
The marathon began at 07:00 am Chile time this morning despite tough conditions and snowfalls. There will be an update - with results - as soon as they become available.
DECEMBER 19TH 2007 (PM)
Willaim Tan has done it! He completed the wheelchair marathon in a time of 9:48:52 and has become the first wheelchair participant to complete a marathon on all seven continents. The other marathon participants hope to be underway tomorrow morning. Many congrats to William on his amazing achievement.
Update: the marathon particpants will have a briefing at 06:00 Chile time tomorrow morning. It is hoped the race will be underway by 08:00. The weather is quite balmy for Antarctica with the expected storm never materialising in the area so far.
DECEMBER 19TH 2007 (AM)
In the early hours of this morning, William Tan was en route to becoming the first person to complete a marathon on Antarctica in a wheelchair. After five hours, he had already passed the half-way point. The weather was amazingly good with temperatures of about -8C, clear blue skies and no wind. However, a storm was forecast to be fast approaching. It was hoped the wheelchair section of this event could be finished before the storm clouds reached Patriot Hills. There are 24 hours of daylight in the location at this time of year so an “all night” effort by William was never going to be an issue. There will be an update on his performance later today.
DECEMBER 18TH 2007 (PM)
The plane took off and the competitors landed safely on the ice in the afternoon! The weather is excellent but a storm is forecast to be approaching. The wheelchair event is going to get underway without delay and we hope to have William Tan succeed in becoming the first person to finish seven marathons on seven continents in a wheelchair.
DECEMBER 18TH 2007 (AM)
GREEN LIGHT - The marathon participants have received an early wake-up call to depart for Antarctica. The Ilyushin 76 cargo plane had already been loaded and is ready for take-off at 9:00 am Chile time. Flight duration to Patriot Hills is 4.5 hours. It is anticipated that the marathon might take place tomorrow. More news later..
