Perfect moment this to blog about blogging - Clock at 10:48pm. I should be beneath the duvet dozing, recovering and building strength to train that few percent better tomorrow than will now be the case. But then there’s the post to write. Can the blogger and the athlete be one? Polar opposites?
Spent quality time with a friend yesterday who often turns into a consultant and advisor of sorts. He directed conversation to corners I’ve not found myself in before. Since, I’ve been walking, training, eating and procrastinating with a series of interconnected confusions on my mind, which of which concerns my blog.
Our conversation came at an interesting time, perhaps as those watershed one’s often do. A conversation that touched on many aspects of who I am and where I’m headed. I’ve not done a proper stock take for a while and definitely didnt realise the need for one as much as I did in a moment at a loss for words.
To what extent can I evolve beyond the athlete? To what am I pushing, what’s the attainable? Whats the goal with the blog, the measurable? Can the two co-exist? Time wise? Energy wise? Can the blog become income generating? Is it all income based, and could I therefore justify athletic performance sacrificed for Internet gain? Could I settle for the second step on the podium with content, as a result of sacrifice to the blogging pursuit?
The one is swim swim swim, bike bike bike, run run run, eat, sleep. The other is thought, expression, content creation, emotional energy and creativity. The one is high risk and exclusive, the other is building something long term and sustainable? Potentially at least.
Its been a fascinating journey of discovery – blogging. Nikola has spent hours changing my frame work of reference regarding the Internet, and taking it seriously. I do. Fully. I know there are Internet sites, South African Internet sites, South African Sports Websites, that are generating respectable advertising revenue. Its being done. And the Internet is just opening to the South African community. Now is the opportune moment. I have loved having a portal to write, to laugh on, to give my account of, to share, to encourage, to hopefully impact and make some positive difference through. But at what cost? For what gain?
My blog is an infant, and so are my thoughts surrounding it. I’ll blog about blogging with more maturity tomorrow. Hopefully in daylight too… I’m knackered and going to hit the sack - as an athlete should.
