After writing an honest account of my turmoiled mind during a negative run in a post last week, I got to watch athletes prepare and race during the Nedbank South African Championships for the Disabled here at Coetzenburg for five days. A moving emotional experience watching their joy and excitement when I complain so bitterly and childishly on a windy day…

At a swim session of mine in the outdoor pool at Coetzenburg I watched two young boys, without arms, battling to put their swim goggles on. They’re weren’t expecting sympathy, nor aid, they were just visibly exciting to be able to do a few lengths in preparation for their nationals. Walking back to the apartment that same afternoon, I saw a wheelchair athlete being pushed to the track by a smiling enthusiastic friend without arms, wheeling her along with his chest. Far out.
What a privilege I have to be in fine form, with no disability, no handicap. I dont doubt my emotions will have their fair share of ups and downs, but I hope to hang on to the perspective gained from watching the Disabled Nationals for some time.
Athletes hope to shine
