Until the end of August anyway. The auction clocks out at midnight on the 31st. So beg, borrow and steal for this three day mtb stage race. Last year I was blown away by the quality of the event all round and especially the superb abundance of class single track.
I’ll happily keep you company at the back of the field, or red line for pride and glory sake – your call.
Alternative bid options are for Christoph Sauser – but he just reclaimed the World Marathon title – so is certainly less gifted at going slow than I am. And then there is Gniel de Villiers, who is an iconic purchase as the first African to win the Dakar Rally, someone I’d like to ride with actually, but you might prefer to join him in his Volkswagen instead. And the fourth lad, Burry Stander, is already off the books with a repeat purchase by his 2010 partner. So that, I believe, leaves me… And you could do worse.
Joking aside, it was one of the highlights to my 2010 year. I seriously enjoyed getting to know Marcel over three days of epic mountain biking and go into this auction with plenty more anticipation knowing just how incredible the gig is.
Last year I had this to say, about being for sale…
“But more than that, a luxury package and three fantastic mountain bike stages comes along with yours truly. And yours truly comes along with a pledge to get you over every summit and down every single track in fine form on your terms. And your purchase contributes entirely to a worthy charity that’s developing mountain biking amongst the Kayamandi Township kids.
I know the waiting list is 100′s deep after the raving reviews of last year’s inaugural Wines2Whales. So for a R15k, $2k or €1.5k – that I’m certain can be a business tax deductible – you cut past the queue. Add a flight from Europe, or even the USA, and its still a steal.
So please consider the opportunity, and pass the information along to mountain bike friends who might be tempted. If you or a contact have any queries from me personally, please get in touch, and I’ll attempt answering any uncertainty.
I look forward to getting to know you over a glass of red too many.”
