Imana Wild Ride 2008 Race Update: Day Two

July 30th, 2008 by ruth

Dan and Max started 2 mins behind the race leaders, which he says they could see most of the time. Apparently they had better tyres on (to ride through the sand) than Max and Dan which resulted in the 2 minute gap being extended. There are a series of hills which you have to walk up, which are appropriately called ”the mothers”, and on the other side of these, is a big ravine with a forest that you have to get through. Dan said this forest was so thick and basically impenetrable except for one little path, which they could not find. It took them about 12 minutes to find this pathway and by that time, they had been passed by some real ”old timers” and were now well behind from the leaders. But they managed to work their way back up into 2nd place.

Dan said it was another day of sensational open beach riding which was great. At one point they saw rhino footprints in the mud… huge footprints which were unmistakable and fresh, both Max and Dan didnt no whether to go forwards of backwards…bit hectic for Dans liking! Because Max and Dan felt so frustrated during today’s stage, they decided to go and do some preriding of tomorrow’s day, after the race. After 2 hours of more frustration, they headed back to the finished where they found out that there is a compulsory route tomorrow! Haha! Shame so they 2 hours were for nothing! Regardless of the frustrations, Dan said it was another beautiful day of riding in the Transkei and good base training. Tomorrow is open roads which favor Dan and Max and they hope to close the gap!
