Jonaskop II

Final 2km

Final 2km

Had a great time on Saturday morning: Jonaskop the 2nd. An ascent of the 15km climb near our farm with a very similar profile to that of Alpe D’Huez. My father and a friend have put on this ‘invitation only’ tongue-in-cheek affair over the past two years. Small, intimate, unique, and now with a feast of a breakfast after…

Considering my lack of riding over the past six weeks, I snuck in a spin on the way to the climb… Every bit counts. Unlike prior to Maui, the bag was a heap of dusty cloth in the corner. But at least it was shifted closer to the laundry basked now.

Michal joined for the 28km warm up to meet the others at the foot of Jonaskop. A few friends from Stellenbosch had joined, including Fraser the Cartmell, who arrived back in Stellenbosch last weekend.

I had my doubts whether Dylan would make it to the top. Exams just finishing and all. But like the second stage of Sani2c Adventure earlier this year, he surprised again.

The Worcester crowd is just great. I should be joining them more often. Many are new recruits to mountain biking so their energy and enthusiasm is still raw and infectious. There’s no replacement for enthusiasm.

I surprised myself, keeping a blured image of Lieb Loots’ (53 years old!) rear wheel. Eventually I faded, and he posted the third fasted split of the day. But it was all handicap. And for the best part, the race was close in the final kilometer. Other than the winner who seemed to bluff his form before for an easy win.

I’d mention what my HR was at, but that might upset coach Gary…

A great morning. Fastest lad was Adriaan Louw - smoking a 59min. And Mari Rabie on the girls side.

I’ll get more photo’s and some video up soon…
