Love Hate in America

July 10th, 2009 by Dan Hugo

Love

Being able to order online, and having it delivered to your doorstep. Without having to sign for a delivery.

The speed of Internet. And its uncapped. Both unfathomable in SA.

I love the right on right rule. Like treating a red robot as a stop/yield sign. Would be left on left in SA, and could change the way we experience traffic.

Love the affordability of Strawberries here. In California at least. Perhaps still more expensive than SA, but in relative terms, its a steal. Love Odwalla Juice, especially the Superfood. And Chocolate Soy Milk.

Truckee. Lots of love for Truckee. But thats a topic on its own, and not reflective of my greater US experience.

Love XM radio. Satellite radio, allowing more choice and better reception.

Hate

I hate that that add tax after quoting food prices. Tell me before what it will cost.

Hate how ‘cookie cutter’ much of the USA is. Same strip mall after strip mall in some parts. Every things is franchised.

Totally hate that I get offered a credit card with my checkout at Walmart. Its cost many innocent folk their retirement in foreign countries.

How all the US currency in paper money looks the same. Can never figure which 1 dollar, 5 dollar, 10 dollar… They need colour and animals on them… And the coin system is even worse. No sense to it at all. Small, large, large, small…

Hate the size of regular SUV’s on the road. Bakkies higher than our farm truck.

The lack of Biltong. Jerky just doesnt sound the same. So never tried it.

More advert time than tour time. Ratio is either 1:1 or worse.

Hate the airport security here. Shoes, jacket, belt. Soon pants and shirts too I tell you.

Love and Hate

I love and hate the 25mph speed limit in Truckee. Definitely adds to the mellow vibe in town, but I can sprint faster. With knobbly’s.

Ben and Jerry’s. Too good to hate. Too bad to love.

Being able to fuel your own vehicle. Liberty – but some days, eish, I miss home.
