Maui living

I’m settling into the Maui vibe – pineapples and all… I’ve been over the little practice course on the bike, done the last parts of the run across the beaches, forest and rocky ledges, another swim or two, done a studio tv interview, attended a pro meeting and today, sitting with my feet up for some r&r.

Its been a treat staying with Adam and his father Grant, hearing some news of South Africa and sharing the excitment of Maui together. A first for them as well. This is territory a South African can walk proudly, with Stotlz winning three titles here and Anke Erlank one. Adam is 17 year old youngster from Durban, and will be racing in his age group on Sunday morning. Its flash back in some ways. I was about his age on my first sports trip, to Cancun Mexico, and was about as wided eyed and bushy tailed as he is. How times have changed. Its great to feel his excitement, at the small things. A valuable reminder.

The apartment is in Kihei, a little up the coast from the race venue at the Maui Prince. Apparently the more local neighbourhood as well. About a 30min spin on the bike.

Its been a grand time. More so from the tourist perspective. There isnt any real moutnain biking to do, nor great trail running. But the feel and atmosphere of the islands are worthy of the travel I guess.

Had some interesting questions at the interview yesterda. Joked with the crew that I was like Bush, not knowing what to answer and wishing I had been prepped. Why did a I decide on Xterra? What does it mean to me to be racing on Maui? My relationship with Conrad? Ones I could laugh through under the lense, but that I’ve pondered over since. What a treat being here. Its been a dream. Of the non-cliche kind.

I’m joining Nils Nilsen for some photo’s just after lunch. Look forward to it. He is a such a talent with his camera, and wants to capture some Maui stuff for his portfolio. I’ll happily volunteer for that call.

In 48hours time, its all over red rover.

It’s your dream – make it happen!!!!
Better prep for some winning commentary before the camera is on you again, since you should never have to compare yourself with Bush.
Hope you had a fun shoot with Nils, he has great talent and is also a local San Diego neighbor. So with him behind the lens and you in front I am certain there are fabulous shots.
