Netvibes – Create your own ‘newspaper’

Posted on by Dan Hugo

If you’re into tracking some blogs, and specific Internet news items, netvibes is your key to unlocking browsing ease and convenience. I’m never quite at the forefront of anything ‘IT’ related and was fascinated and blown away by this online rss reading application.

I registered and created some of my own tabs, a collection of all the websites I usually check which have an rss feed. Some such as Die Burger news, their specific sports news feed, Media24 Top news stories, as well as friends blogs I enjoy keeping an eye on, and even my own personal feeds for Gmail and Facebook. Creating one single portal where I could keep an eye on everything, without having to enter url’s for half my time.

Netvibes Ginger was then released, making Netvibes a publishing platform. I’ve registered netvibes.com/dan-hugo  as my personal ‘universe’. Different from my personal one as this is public and can be accessed by anyone. I’ve not done much with it, and will keep adding to it as I go along.

Something a bit random on a Sunday night I know, but if you are where I was at a few weeks ago, this small bit of information in this post could radically change your daily life.

Netvibes is a multi-lingual Ajax-based personalized start page much like Pageflakes, My Yahoo!, iGoogle, and Microsoft Live. It is organized into tabs, with each tab containing user-defined modules. Built-in Netvibes modules include an RSS/Atom feed reader, local weather forecasts, a calendar supporting iCal, bookmarks, notes, to-do lists, multiple searches, support for POP3, IMAP4 email as well as several webmail providers including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, and AOL Mail, Box.net web storage, del.icio.us, Meebo, Flickr photos, podcastsupport with a built in audio player, and several others. A page can be personalized further through the use of one of many existing themes or users can create their own theme with a wallpaper of their choosing. Customized tabs, feeds and modules can be shared with others individually or via the Netvibes Ecosystem. – (Wikipedia)
