Race ready in Sweet Home Alabama
May 23rd, 2009 by Dan Hugo
Tomorrow morning will start at 430am with a grumpie alarm three hours prior to race start. Will be attending a short memorial service for Steve Larsen at the venue, a man I regrettably only got to spend brief moments with in Vegas, but who has been an icon for years. I’ve travelled a few parts of the world with a hand-me-down bike bag bearing his name – a hand-me-down from him to Stoltz, and Stoltz to myself. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and five kids.

My luxuary commute from Nashville to Bermingham
730 gets a two lap non-wetsuit swim going for my new swim stroke as changed in the infinity pool analyses this week (but things usually get worse before better). I’ve replaced the ripped off cleat mount earlier today (Crank Brother’s 3-hole road shoe adapter) which was the main casualty of Monday’s foolishness on a curbside. Otherwise I’ve changed my Puma Complete Racer elastics, and hope to spend less time star-struck in transition. I’ve mounted some Proto Specialized LK Armadillo Elite tires (course is super rocky – punctured while pre-riding), and so feeling rip roaring and ready to go.
Would be neat having a fine swim, and trying to follow Stoltz magic on the trail. The run is two parts, fast first half and then a slow latter @ crazy steep pitches. Would be great to have a solid shuffle about, and hope to be more in the mix with Vine and Middaugh by the end than last week. Wish me well…

How’d it go?
If Oak Mountain is super rocky, Burns Park (South Central Cup) is idon’tknowwhat. The place is lousy with rock gardens. Today I pinch-flatted both front and rear over a section, so I’ll be carrying two spare tubes on race day.
