I was not in a positive mind frame, and it showed. Something like Karma. My new race kit hadnt arrived, and I was cut up over it. The bad energy became a rear flat. In transition. I assume the tire I’d put on a few days earlier, which was having seating issues, popped in the heat as I gave it plenty pressure to try and prevent it from burbing on the ride. Alas.
I wasnt prepared with repair spares, begged about for an inner, got tossed one, pumped and pumped, realise the inner was punctured, begged another, struggled with a CO2 cartridge, rolled that with too little air in on the first 1k, and nursed back into transition to inflate some more.
The paddle was the better of the three. Air was a dry and above 34 degree. I should also rather write of my semi-long ride the afternoon before in the Msinsi Reserve. Giraffe, wildebeast, heards of buck, thankfully no sighting of the notorious crocodiles about, or the male rhino, but all in an incredibly tranquil back drop very different from home.
At the front end Andrew Birkett, the talented youngster who’s placed second in the prior two events, won his first Jeep Msinsi Multisport event. Much deserved.
So not a great outing in all, but a lesson to either be all there, or not at all.

Hey Dan
I really enjoy reading your blog.
Entertaining, honest and inspiring.
Please take this in the spirit it is intended.
You really need to get your race day shit together if you are going to compete at the highest level. Starting a race concerned about your equipment and putting extra air into a tire is a rookie mistake. Attention to detail dude. You train so hard don’t let this stuff derail your progress. I am sure you will make It right to the top IF you become a pro in the true sense of the word.
All the best for your American adventure. Go get them.
