Road cycling mecca in Argus Cycle Tour week

Posted on by Dan Hugo

Always blows my mind seeing bikes being dusted off for Argus week. I’m sure the phenomenon is visible throughout South Africa, but none more so than here in Stellenbosch. Bikes are taken down from the attic, wheels pumped, helmets with last year’s Argus number still on are pulled from some forgotten drawer for a few a few brief days to gain some ‘fitness’ for the 109km of the Worlds Biggest Bike Race.

Its not that I’m negative toward to the event, if anything, I think its such a positive energy on the South African sporting calender, my frustration is more slanted at the mentality of ‘that being cycling’ which comes with the territory. I wish it was the start, and not the destination. I wish it launched the 35 000 cyclists into more regular riding, perhaps even venture off road, experience climbing a pass along the garden route at Blaaukraans, decend a technical singletrack, and just realise there’s more to biking than a sub 3hour Argus.

The roads around The Bosch carried some extra bike traffic today, with the Giro del Capo finishing with a few loops up and down the Hellshoogte Pass. I missed the tail end of the day (having had a pilates class) and just managed to see South Africa’s golden boy, Robert Hunter, make his way up his final ascent after a misfortunate puncture which may well have cost him the stage.

Apparently Hunter was riding exceptionally well again today after three inspired stages from him personally and his Barloworld Team. He had been in a break and was climbing well to back it up. He finished second on the last climb of the opening stage ending at the top of Bain’s Kloof Pass. Great form for a sprinter.

I’ve met Hunter, at that same EA Sports Poker Night in Joburg, and was humbled by his friendly nature, yet commanding firm presence. He’s done as well as any South African roadie could dream, and won a stage at the Tour de France. With this kind of personal form alongside an even better Barloworld outfit this year, perhaps another TdF stage victory is destined for South Africa.

If you’re one of the many doing some last minute prep for Sunday’s big ride, all the best. Enjoy. Sip and savour the carnival atmosphere, enjoy the views and the noise along the way. And dont hang up the bike on Monday…
