Ruth at the Absa Cape Epic 2008 in support of Team Songo.info

March 31st, 2008 by Dan Hugo

Christoph Sauser and Burry Stander are in Yellow after stage 2 of the Cape Epic, riding with purpose and meaning to create awareness and and raise funds to build a bmx track in Kayamandi (Wikipedia) for the kids of the township. Ruth has been instrumental in the entire initiative and is spending the week on the Epic in support of the riders and cause, as well as build interest and awareness at for the Songo Project.

After a 4th in the opening prologue, Sauser and Stander won Stage 1 in by 22seconds. I was getting criptic txts message from Ruth and could hardly believe it. I feel in some small measure that through Ruth I have a vested interest in the project and so too in the two riders. We’ve been speculating much on how they’d do against the worlds best mountain bikers, and none of us expected domination.

My 4h mtb long ride today was a bit disruptive with the news feed via my Sweetlove on the tele, especially after hearing Burry had punctured. But the lads clawed their way back to the main pack, and finished second on the stage, and took more time on the GC. It’s early days still, with six stages to ride before the finish on Saturday at Lourensford in Somerset West near Cape Town, but they could surely not have hoped to be in a much better position after stage2.

Ruth says the team dynamics have been brilliant, and the presence for the Songo.info Project has been unmissable. I really hope this will equate to more donations and ultimately giving the kids of Kayamandi the opportunity to experience life beyond poverty and struggle.
