Sabie Experience 08 - half way to heaven

December 15th, 2008 by Dan Hugo

Reached the top after 3h15 of climbing. Some 40km of it. A day totalling 1900m of elevation gain. Eish. Seemed heaven couldn’t be far off.

Formed a real fun bunch midway up the climb and stayed together till the end. Across old ox wagon roads, under pelting rain, down slippery descents, as well as picnics together at the feed stations. Best being the marshmellow fish at the final stop. Fine company is king.

Much enjoyed, but excessive climbing dampened my enthusiasm. Luckily I could keep checking my Garmin Edge 705 and knew how much elevation gain remained. Conrad asked at one aid station of the road ahead. She said it keeps upward. But that it was beautiful. Stoltz said it had been beautiful for a long while. We’d had sufficient “beautiful”.

One more lenghty day tomorrow, before finishing with a short time trial on Tuesday. May even go bridge swinging tomorrow afternoon. Anything but another hurtful plod like this evening…
