Did a ride out along the coast yesterday, from Stellenbosch (around the mountain on the left below) , along the coast through Strand, Gordan’s Bay, onward to Rooielse and back. One of the most scenic rides, and one which I’ve mentioned as part of the Totalsports Challenge route.

A pleasure riding with my ‘laptop’ on the handlebars. I’ll do a full on review when I’ve figured all of the Edge 705. But its brilliant in how much it can kickout at once. With two pre-set screens of 8 displays, 16 different data fields can be viewed with one click.
I currently have: time, speed, distance, HR, gradient, cadence, time of day and elevation on the first screen, and ave speed, ave cadenece, ave HR, total ascent, lap time, lap distance, sunset (for when I’ve procrastinated all day) and bearing.

I ride with some heavy as tractor tires. Mainly to allow dor gravel riding when a road doesnt have a shoulder and the taxi’s are flying by, but also as they are puncture resistant and make training that bit harder. Had my first flat with them yesterday, well, even puncuted the inner rim…

Stopped on the way back to see a mother nurturing a calf. Every spring Southern Right Wales come to our shores and this would be some of the earlier ones.
Description
Colour black with occasional white markings along back and underside; the body is stocky and fat, smoothly rotund without a trace of dorsal fin or any ridge along the back.

Cruising Speed
5 – 8 km/h or 2 – 3 knots
Gestation
About one year. Calves 5 – 6 metres at birth. Growth rate about 3cm a day. August is the best calving month. Pregnancy every 3 – 7 years. Lactation 4 – 8 months.
Longevity
Estimated to be 90 – 100 years.
