Travel unravel

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Was semi orderly and timely today - getting to the airport with more than 10min to spare to closing. A margin that is more familiar on the other side of closing. Thankfully so, as the new airport terminal caught me off guard. Further walk, but through a world class facility. A proudly South African moment. [...]

New York

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Preface: Delayed, I know. But this post is more for me, and for the reflection some distant day sitting with the grandkids…
Monday morning, 6am , and the first wrestling match for the day with the girl checking Jet Blue re my oversized 80pound bike bag. I more than double the cost of my ticket. But [...]

Love Hate in America

Love
Being able to order online, and having it delivered to your doorstep. Without having to sign for a delivery.
The speed of Internet. And its uncapped. Both unfathomable in SA.

Accommodation in New York?

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

So I’m chancing my luck. Why not.
Somebody? Anybody? Know of a friend who would fancy putting myself and a sister up for three nights next week, Monday through Wednesday, anywhere in New York?

My email is dghugo[at]gmail.com
Thanks for the consideration. Could make for a fun story.

City of Music

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

I made it round more lush green countryside with quaint wooden fences and dilapidated sheds reminding me of time’s peaceful steady march onward toward decay. Quiet roads from Craig Evan’s home in Spring Hill - two hops, three skips and a jump from Nashville - the city of music. This time I made it down [...]

On your marks

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Race start at 830am.
Short 1000m swim in strong current between shallow rocks. Will be non-wetsuit.
Bike is rigged with new Rotor Rings (thanks Benno), new compound LK’s (thanks Garth), insulation taped gels and spares beneath the seat.
Bike course will be super fast, yet the most technical course on the circuit. Definitely the most fun course.

“Everything but the kitchen sink” (ben and jerry’s)

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Been a great week back in thin Sierra Nevada air - settling training and bio-rhythms after 10days on the Midwest trail. It will take most of the 10days here to adapt to the lessened oxygen effect before heading North to Idaho next Thursday. More exciting back home was the finalizing of a new dreamGiver in [...]

Vegas: The report

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Its nine hours down from Truckee!  With Emma’s favourite on repeat as a non-option: The Eels Band, this while driving through the most monotonous landscape thinking, “The Karoo has nothing on this”:

AAA - American Adventure Again

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Somehow I managed to check 60kg of paraphernalia straight through from Cape Town to Reno without swiping the not-gold-at-all plastic freedom; an upbeat travel prelude soon damped by 1hour of flight delay and a reservation made incorrectly under Daniel Godfrey and not Daniel Hugo. With an 18hour flight, 10hour layover, 7hour flight, and 1 hour [...]

This and that

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

It has been ten days since the 6hour exertion of the Totalsports Challenge, ten fragile days. Managed to get some work done which included three stunning sessions up the coast while camping for the weekend with my flatmate Michal (birthday wishes). Another ride above Hermanus, a 1h45 long run on the Onrus coastline, and a [...]

Reno-Seattle - in thought and flight

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Strange being on a twin prop plane. Assuming the two ‘fan’s’ on either side makes it one. About as strange as the girl diagonally across shirt’s inscription: “delightfully tacky, yet unrefined”. Or about as strange as the feeling of  being Maui bound.

Last day in The Bosch

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

My time in Stellenbosch comes to an end tomorrow with a usual chaotic day of frantic last minute’s and packing. Sort of nostalgic this time. Unsure why, just out and about for 7 weeks on this trip but perhaps it’s related to the ‘big appreciation of home’ patch I’m in? Will do a run on [...]
