The best lunch in Stellenbosch

March 5th, 2009 by Dan Hugo

Two weeks of a daily fix at Greengate over lunch, and I am feeling a rejuvenation of sorts. That said, I have been resting plenty with a niggling hip, shoulder and a command to keep my head still, which usually does the metamorphoses from zombie to jack in a box quite well. But what has been an unforeseen result, which I’d like to write on tonight, is the bigger nutrition picture I now hound.

Greengate Deli and Eatery Buffet Lunch

I had not foreseen the motivation rooted in a near perfect, holistic lunch - to better my breakfast’s, dinner’s and snack times. The opportunity at Greengate Deli and Eatery has become the highlight of my day, feeling like a dose of vitality on a plate. I see each dish not as a negative to minimize, but an opportunity to build health. I try dish small portions of most dishes, from Chicken and Broccoli pie, to beetroot, to couscous and butternut with pumpkin seeds.

Breakfasts are a homemade muesli mix, had with milk. Its been the start to the day for some time, albeit lax in consistency. Starting the day well sets it up. I love fresh juice (not always readily available in my fridge), and being hostile to fruit since early on, I find it the best way to get some into the tank with breakfast. Ideally without any colourants, flavourants and preservatives.

That’s the general fad right there: less processed, less manipulated, as simple and pure as possible.

“A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools.”
~ Spanish Proverb

Dinners I am trying to keep to something fresh such as a salmon salad (last nights’ was great), or some raw veggies with humus dip (wasnt much else around tonight…), that type of vibe. An attempt to cut down on evening starch and carbohydrates.

Snacking has been on nuts and dried fruits, of which South Africa has some of the best I’ve come across. My favourite would be dried mango strips. How good is the dried mango from Woolies?

Nothing raving mad, just a more consistent push to what I already know my body responds well to, and trying to avoid the treats I love yet dont have the profitable after effect. So far so good. Enjoying the cleansing feeling and increased energy, even if Greengate and the diet is just partly responsible.

Will keep you posted.
