The one setting the bar – Conrad Stoltz

If only he wouldn’t set it as high? My friend and inspiration source won his 7th Xterra Series crown this past weekend after placing 2nd at the Series Final in Ogden’s Snow Basin in Utah. Seven series wins goes a long way to reflect his holistic health and longevity approach to life and sport balancedwith his fierce determination to remain on top and etch his renown for all time. Big admiration for Stoltz.

It was meant to be the first of two racing for myself, but one I canned due to illness off the back of a roller coaster year. I was sitting at dinner table, had asked forgiveness, and kept checking for twitter updates by the minute (Thanks Ross). It wasn’t difficult not being there – I’d have been more frustrated racing than not), but I envied those with form getting to playing their hand. I love racing, I love when the stakes are stacked; I love the social side thereof, and the art within expressing preparation. It’s a course I’ve never done, and one that wouldn’t suit my profile: Altitude, excessive climbing, and little technical. But I’d have fancied being there, shooting the breeze with Craig. Alas.

Despite not being there, the series structure, with five results and the final counting towards the overall standings, I’d calculated a 5th was probable. In fact, even if I were there, fifth would have been probable considering the course. And 5th it was, to add to my 2nd in the Series last year. Happy with that, all things considered. But who wants to be just happy? Not Stoltz, nor I.

Congrats Stoltz. Wish you weren’t setting the bar so high.
