Winter Blues

Managed to have a small presence at the first of four events of the Jeep Msinsi Multisport series at Albert Falls last weekend, nicking a mike for some commentating. I really enjoyed the little I did, and sure hope to more in the future.

The highlight of my day was my misses taking part in her first multisport event. On the minimal training she had in bag, it twas a proper testing day out. The 5km run she handled well, but the 20km ride was more bumpy than planned for, with two lengthy climbs. Thankfully her brother and friend who raced alongside her could give the needed bits of encouragement and even pushing when needed. The hopped into a K3 for the 5km paddle, and finished well all smiles. Hoping it to be the first of many, but now 10 days on, she reckons she’s not yet recovered…

My in-law time was thankfully not a “Family Stone” affair, and I had a great time getting to know Ruth’s family. Natal is such a different vibe, from the laid back English finishing each sentence with ‘hey’, to the unique rolling hill landscape. A different nation there I reckon.

Back in The Bosch now after a trip through the Karoo. Cold, wet, very much icy winter after moderate days in Natal. Been loving watching the tour. Can train for months on the inspiration I get from it. My dow’s on Rasmussen. From a patriotic stance, how brilliant was Hunter’s stage win. Such a positive step for minority sports in South Africa. Also, fantastic to see the return Barloworld has been getting in the tour on their investment. All round positivity for South Africa.

Boy’s and their toys… I am guilty. But the latest is a gift from Garmin. The new Forerunner 305. What a treat. What an insane bit of equipment. It has blown me away with its unlimited applications. I just dislike it showing my pace as 5’30/km when I think I’m at 4’/km. Or when it says my run total was 7km when I feel like its been 10km. But despite it being occasionally ‘off’ its been fun playing. It will be particularly valuable when relaying data to my coach in the US. Real grateful to Garmin South Africa.
